A&E’s ‘The Killing Season” Part 6 Delves Into Murders Along I-4 in Florida Where FBI Claims Ideal Profession For a Serial Killer Is a Long-Haul Trucker

NEWSDAY Long Island: Six years after the search for Shannan Gilbert led to the discovery of 10 other sets of human remains near Gilgo Beach believed to be the work of one or more serial killers, a new documentary series to be screened at the Hamptons International Film Festival on Sunday October 9th attempts to examine why police have failed to solve the mystery. Corruption at the top of the Suffolk County Police Department and prostitutes as victims are explored as barriers to cracking the notorious case in “The Killing Season,” an eight-part series that premieres next month on A&E on Satirday November 5th, 9:00 PM.
Documentarians Rachel Mills and Josh Zeman spent four years off-and-on conducting interviews and tracking leads on Long Island from Massapequa to Oak Beach, with the Gilgo mystery serving as a centerpiece of the series that also explores serial killings of women in Atlantic City and New Mexico. The Gilgo killings have garnered nationwide attention after detectives searching for Gilbert, a prostitute who disappeared in May 2010, discovered four women’s bodies in nearby Gilgo Beach seven months after she vanished and concluded it was the work of a serial killer. Other human remains were later found along nearby Ocean Parkway, which suggested to detectives there was more than one person responsible for the killings.

A&E’s ‘The Killing Season” Part 6 Delves Into Murders Along I-4 in Florida Where FBI Claims Ideal Profession For a Serial Killer Is a Long-Haul Trucker. FBI REPORT: If there is such a thing as an ideal profession for a serial killer, it may well be as a long-haul truck driver. FBI Crime Analyst Christie Palazzolo is quick to point out that long-haul trucking is an honorable profession and that the overwhelming majority of drivers are not murderers—but it does happen, and the pattern is unmistakable. More than a decade ago, analysts for the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP)—the only national database of serial crimes—began to see a marked increase in the number of bodies recovered along the side of the road.

A majority of the victims were truck-stop prostitutes, and it turned out that many of the suspects were long-haul truckers. “We had an inordinate number of victims and offenders from this rather specific population pool,” Palazzolo explained. To make matters worse, these cases are extremely difficult to investigate. A long-haul driver can pick up a prostitute at a truck stop in Georgia rape and murder her and dump her body on the side of the road in Florida later that day. The victim has no connection to the area where she was found, and there may be no forensic evidence to collect because the crime was committed hundreds of miles away. The local police detectives investigating the case might have little experience dealing with a crime of this nature and may be faced with few, if any, leads.
