New York Office of the FBI, announced the arrest of Hassan Nemazee, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Nemazee Capital Corporation, in connection with a scheme to defraud Citibank, N.A. (Citibank). According to the complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, Nemazee engaged in a fraudulent scheme to induce Citibank to lend up to $74 million to Nemazee based on false representations that Nemazee owned millions of dollars in collateral. Nemazee submitted, and caused to be submitted to Citibank numerous documents that purported to establish the existence of accounts in Nemazee’s name at various financial institutions containing many hundreds of millions of dollars. In fact, those were fraudulent and forged documents. Hassan Nemazee is now serving a 12 year jail sentence. In 1999 Mr. Nemazee was nominated by President Clinton to serve as ambassador to Argentina but the nomination was eventually withdrawn. He is also one of the founders of the Iranian American Political Action Committee.
HASSAN NEMAZEE was arrested on August 25, 2009, and subsequently indicted for defrauding Citibank, HSBC, and Bank of America, N.A., of morethan $290 million in loan proceeds. NEMAZEE’s scheme depended on his use of fraudulent documents, including phony account statements and phony correspondence bearing forged signatures. ON Aug. 23, 2009, federal agents interviewed Nemazee at Newark Liberty International Airport as he was in the process of checking in for a flight to Rome. On Aug. 24, 2009, Nemazee repaid to Citibank his outstanding loan, an amount in excess of $74 million. Nemazee, 59, resided in Manhattan and Katonah, N.Y. He is charged with one count of bank fraud, which carries a maximum prison term of 30 years and a maximum fine of $1,000,000 or twice the gain or loss resulting from the crime.
Vice President Joe Biden, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Tuesday evening they plan to return or donate to charity campaign contributions from Democratic financier Hassan Nemazee, who was arrested and charged with trying to defraud Citibank of $74 million by offering fake collateral on a loan. Nemazee made an impact in Democratic politics as a so-called bundler who rounded up checks from others. Since the early 1990s, when he first emerged as a prominent moneyman for the Clinton-Gore presidential campaign, Nemazee also has personally contributed more than $500,000 to dozens of primarily Democratic candidates, committees and causes, ranging from President Obama, Hillary Clinton and Rahm Emanuel to half the members of the U.S. Senate.
Among the biggest beneficiaries were the three national Democratic Party committees. Nemazee, 59, contributed $113,500 to the Democratic National Committee, $89,200 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and $29,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Federal Election Commission records show. Nemazee, who lived in New York and primarily made his fortune in investing, also served as national finance chair for the DSCC while Schumer chaired the group during the 2006 election cycle, when the committee raised $121 million (compared to $89 million for its Republican counterpart, the National Republican Senatorial Committee) and helped Democrats take control of the Senate.
Nemazee, who contributed $8,300 to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s campaigns for Senate in New York and for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, also was a top bundler for Clinton’s presidential bid, raising at least $100,000 from other donors. After Hillary Clinton conceded the nomination to Obama, Nemazee helped him raise at least $500,000, in addition to contributing $9,200 of his own to a joint committee Obama set up with the DNC. And when Obama defeated Republican John McCain in the general election, Nemazee contributed another $50,000 to the non-profit corporation Obama set up to pay for his inauguration and the surrounding festivities.
WASHINGTON — Hassan Nemazee the national finance chairmen for Senator Clinton 2008 presidential campaign left Damascus last night after a visit there as part of a RAND Corp. delegation to meet with Middle Eastern leaders. According to the Syrian press, the RAND delegation met with President Assad on Wednesday, the day the world learned that a Hezbollah master terrorist, Imad Mugniyeh, was slain in a car bombing in the Syrian capital. The New York Sun confirmed the presence of the Clinton campaign official, Hassan Nemazee, on the RAND delegation through two sources familiar with the trip. In addition, the night manager of the Four Seasons Hotel in Damascus told the Sun: “Mr. Hassan Nemazee has been checked out of the hotel. He left the night of the 14th.” The Clinton campaign offered no comment last night. Mr. Nemazee’s assistant in New York would only say Mr. Nemazee was traveling. But the presence of Mr. Nemazee, a former fund-raiser for Senator Kerry’s presidential campaign in 2004 and a close ally of the Clintons, raises questions for some analysts about what Mrs. Clinton would do as president with regard to Syria, a nation General Petraeus until recently has said was facilitating the travel of Al Qaeda terrorists into Iraq and the United Nations is investigating for its role in the assassination of Lebanon’s president, Rafik Hariri. In 1999 Mr. Nemazee was nominated by President Clinton to serve as ambassador to Argentina but the nomination was eventually withdrawn. He is also one of the founders of the Iranian American Political Action Committee.
In 2001, at the invitation of Mobil Oil Chairman Lucio Noto, whom he counts as a “personal friend,” Hassan Nemazee joined the board of the American-Iranian Council, a U.S. lobbying group that consistently has supported lifting U.S. sanctions on Iran and accommodating the Tehran regime, which POTUS Obama has put into action and gave Iran $1.7 billion dollars. Hassan Nemazee also helped establish the Iranian-American Political Action Committee (IAPAC) Because of his association with IAPAC, Hassan Nemazee was accused of serving as an agent for the Islamic government of Iran by the Student Movement Coordinating Committee for Democracy in Iran (SMCCDI)- via Crosswalk. As reported at Crosswalk, political scientist Jerome Corsi, told CNSNews.com, “The Democratic Party and John Kerry have been funded by pro-mullah groups who have Israel as their sworn enemy. They are funding insurgents to go against our troops in Iraq, and John Kerry wants to give them nuclear fuel.” In 2006 Bill Clinton attended a dinner earlier this year sponsored by Namazee that raked in $500,000 for his wife’s presidential election: The former president has been the featured guest at a series of exclusive lunches and dinners, where attendees are asked to pony up $4,600 _ the maximum allowable contribution _ to his wife’s campaign.
