South Gate Ridge Crime Watch Reports Corey Scogin Stabs Publix Employee at Village Shopping Plaza 3690 Bee Ridge Rd Sarasota Fl. An employee of Publix Supermarket on Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota is in the hospital recovering after she was stabbed by Corey Scogin on Thursday morning, 7/21/2016. Sarasota County deputies were called to the grocery store about 10:13 a.m. for reports of a supposed shoplifting, but it turned out to not be a shoplifting case, Corey Scogin just stabbed the Publix female worker for no reason at all, he did not know the victim as per a Publix employee’s statement this morning.

Defendant Corey D. Scogin DOB 8/31/1986 stated to Sarasota Sheriff Dept Detectives that he was angry at his Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market manager and wanted to randomly choose and kill a person, he then stabbed the female Publix employee in the back of the neck with his Buck knife, he did not know her!

While Sheriff Deputies were on the way, they learned it involved a stabbing. Witnesses say the employee, a 57-year-old woman was stabbed her in the back of the neck by Corey D. Scogin, DOB 08/31/86. They say he then stabbed himself several times before he ran off and headed south on Maceachen Boulevard toward an apartment complex in Sarasota, he lives at 4663 Hunter Ridge Drive in South Gate Ridge. Deputies arrested the suspect and a K-9 unit found the knife used during the incident at a nearby tennis court. The suspect and the victim were taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, they did not know each other before the incident. They are both in stable condition.

However, while the bizarre incident at the Bee Ridge Road store was first dispatched at approximately 10:13 a.m. as stemming from a possible shoplifting incident, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office later updated the report as a “random” stabbing. “Despite the initial 911 call for service indicating that the suspect had ‘shoplifted,’ no theft actually occurred or was in progress. This incident was strictly a stabbing,” the agency said. “The incident does appear to be random.” The dirtball suspect was identified as Corey D. Scogin, DOB 08/31/86, of 4663 Hunter Ridge Drive, Sarasota Fl, he was in the Publix store almost everyday to buy cigarettes so an associate at the store told me. He had been working across the street as a Stocker Sales Associate at the Walmart Neighborhood Store before he was fired. He faces one count of Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon charge, it should be upgraded to attempted murder!

Corey Scogin is an ideal example of why people should be armed in Sarasota and those who have a concealed weapon license should be able to open carry in Florida. I was in the Publix Store 3690 Bee Ridge Rd South Gate Ridge Sarasota at 8:15 am on July 21st 2016 just two hours before this dirtball Corey Scogin shows up and starts stabbing random people, I don’t believe Corey Scogin would have brought a knife to a gun fight if he knew people were armed in the Publix store.
