Possible Break In Missing IU Student Lauren Spierer Case with Arrest of Sex Offender Justin Wagers as PI Bo Dietl Blasts Bloomington PD Chief

“I guess it feels different because the police said the raid is linked to Lauren’s investigation — and the FBI is involved,” Charlene Spierer told The NY Post on Friday. Spierer learned of the developments through media reports and hasn’t been updated by the FBI or Bloomington police. “I don’t have any specifics,” she said. Justin Wagers, 35, of Martinsville, who is being held on charges of public indecency and performing sexual conduct in the presence of a minor, is connected to the FBI probe, officials said.
Charlene and her husband, Robert, have two private investigators in Indiana working the case, said Michael Ciravolo, president for the firm, Beau Dietl and Associates. “We know they took away soil samples, took away the car,” Ciravolo told The Post. “From what we’re hearing, there was no reaction from the dogs. We haven’t gotten any word that there were any positive signs, or that they’ve come up with anything regarding Lauren or anybody else.”
Wagers, known as a “serial flasher,” has numerous convictions for sex-related offenses. County police agencies and the FBI were tight-lipped about the search. Investigators towed a white pickup truck from the property that appears to be owned by Sex Offender Justin Wagers.
Meanwhile, private-eye CEO Bo Dietl blasted Bloomington Chief Michael Diekhoff. “The family shouldn’t be learning about this from the media,” Dietl told The Post. “The Bloomington police have kept this family in the dark for four years now.” In 2011, Dietl called the top cop “Gomer Pyle” — accusing him of not cooperating with his gumshoes and of soft-pedaling in the probe. He apologized then, but renewed his attack Friday. “The chief of police used to be a traffic cop. Maybe he should still be a traffic cop,” he said.
Sex Offender Justin Wagers: According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Wagers has been a registered sex offender since 2007. That’s when he was released for crimes he was convicted of in 2005. But Indiana court records indicate Wagers first faced criminal charges as early as 1999. In total, he’s been charges with sex crimes, including public indecency and vicarious sexual gratification, more than two dozen times in several counties. In 2011, Wagers was picked up again for intimidation, invasion of privacy and harassment in Monroe County and public indecency in Johnson County.
He later pleaded guilty to the intimidation, invasion of privacy and public indecency charges and was sentenced to two years in prison. The harassment charge was dismissed. Most recently, Wagers was arrested and accused of being a serial flasher by Johnson County Sheriff’s Office investigators. A woman claimed Wagers exposed himself to her while she was riding her bike in Greenwood last August. Investigators believe he committed similar crimes in Franklin and Edinburgh. He is now in custody for those crimes at the Johnson County Jail.
