Typical of the sovereign citizen group a simple traffic stop by law enforcement turns violent and the ensuing shoot-out leaves one dead. The leader of a group of armed sovereign citizen protesters who had occupied a federal wildlife refuge in eastern Oregon for 24 days was arrested along with four others Tuesday after a traffic stop prompted gunfire that left one person dead and another injured. The FBI and Oregon State Police arrested Ammon Bundy, 40, his brother Ryan, 43, Brian Cavalier, 44, Shawna Cox, 59, and Ryan Payne, 32, at around 4:25 p.m. local time on U.S. Highway 395.Three other people were arrested separately. The FBI said Joseph O’Shaughnessy, 45, and Peter Santilli, 50, were arrested in the nearby town of Burns, Ore. Hours later, authorities said Jon Ritzheimer, 32, turned himself into the Peoria, Ariz. police department. The FBI said all eight face a federal felony charge of conspiracy to impede officers of the United States from discharging their official duties through the use of force, intimidation or threats. Neither the FBI nor Oregon State Police released details about what set off the gunfire at the traffic stop. The Oregonian reported that the deceased man was 55-year-old Robert “Lavoy” Finicum, the groups’ spokesperson. Authorities said no other information about the deceased would be released pending formal identification by the local medical examiner’s office. Ammon Bundy’s sovereign citizen group, calling itself the Citizens for Constitutional Freedom, seized the refuge’s headquarters on Jan. 2 in protest of what they viewed as onerous federal land restrictions, as well as the prison sentences of two local ranchers convicted of setting fires.
According to The Oregonian, Ammon Bundy’s sovereign citizen group planed to occupy the building for several years and turn it into a safe haven for so-called sovereign citizens whose aim is to live outside the reach of a “tyrannical” federal government. The group is armed and told local press that militia members won’t hesitate to fire upon police and federal officials. Three of Sovereign Citizen Cliven Bundy’s sons and approximately 150 other armed militia members — most of them remnants of the 2014 Sovereign Citizen Bundy Ranch standoff in Nevada — have taken over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge building in Harney County, Oregon, allegedly to provoke a standoff with the federal government. The anti -governement sovereign citizen group was led by Cliven Bundy’s son, Ammon Bundy, who is accompanied by brothers Ryan Bundy and Mel Bundy. The militia guys are there to restore freedom by preventing the imprisonment of two local ranchers, Dwight Lincoln Hammond, Jr., 73, and his son, Steven Dwight Hammond, 46, who were convicted of arson on federal land. In 2001, the Hammonds set fire to 139 acres that they leased from the BLM for grazing, to cover up evidence of out of season hunting they’d been doing on the land; after losing an appeal, the Hammonds reporedt to prison Monday, January 4. The Hammonds’ supporters insist that the BLM land was totally theirs to do with as they please, not the U.S. Government’s, because as the Bundy sovereign citizens argue in an online manifesto, the Constitution forbids the federal government from owning land. Maybe no court has ever agreed with them, but it’s right there in the Constitution.
