Sarasota ‘Take Aim’ Gun Range Man Commits Suicide With Gun Rental A Growing Trend Nationwide As Many People Are Killing Themselves With Rented Guns at Shooting Ranges

Saturday, August 29, 2015

Sarasota Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Take Aim Gun Range Friday afternoon after a customer killed himself on the firing line with a rented pistol. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Wendy Rose said the victim, a man in his 70s, came to the range in the afternoon to target shoot with two friends. “He’d shot here before, but he hadn’t been here in years,” Rose said. After the three men finished shooting, and as the victim’s two friends were walking out, the man turned the handgun on himself and fired. He was pronounced dead a short time later. “He shot himself,” Rose said. “His friends didn’t see it. Their backs were turned.” Detectives, she said, reviewed a video that showed the entire incident.

CDC has tracked about 50 suicides at gun ranges in recent years, but that’s only from piecemeal stats in a handful of states—and it doesn’t include freewheeling Florida, where there have been a rash of range deaths, including a handful in Tampa Bay and a whopping 11 with rented guns in the Orlando area alone since 2009, prompting some range owners to shut down their rental operations.

Hey look here, from my point of view as gun enthusiastic and target shooter, I go to Take Aim indoor gun range and to the High Noon indoor gun range, both in Sarasota, and to the outdoor Knight’s Trail Park Gun Range in Nokomis Fl, (photo above NRA certified instructor Derek Jones and Bill Warner), they are all good facilities and all very safety conscious, there is no way to know or stop someone with a loaded gun who wants to kill themselves, it can happen in an instant.

Inside gun ranges, individuals can “rent” a gun without any of the precautions that happen before an individual buys a gun. They don’t have to pass a criminal background check. There’s no check of their mental health records, although some require individuals to attest to their mental competence. Many gun ranges don’t even collect names or identification. And that’s not even the worst part. Even those gun ranges that want to check the backgrounds for rental customers are not permitted to. Stephen Fischer of the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services told Politico Magazine earlier this month that individuals who rent guns don’t actually “possess” them because they don’t take them off the premises. So federal background check law doesn’t apply, and the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is not permitted to conduct a check. Many states, including Florida, take the same position that they will not conduct background checks for gun rentals.
