The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office arrested three teenagers after they burglarized a south Venice pawn shop and stole 11 firearms. On Wednesday, deputies responded to Gulf Coast Jewelry and Pawn in the 1800 block of Tamiami Trail, when a bystander noticed the front window had been smashed. Surveillance video captured two male suspects using their t-shirts to conceal their faces as they broke the glass and entered the store. Moments later, the suspects are seen fleeing from the business carrying rifles.

A witness helped lead detectives to Kenneth Major, DOB 1/12/00, 15, and Jacob Hopwood, DOB 3/27/98, 17, both of Punta Gorda, and Emily Brodkorb, DOB 8/18/99, 15, of Sarasota. As detectives took the teens into custody, they discovered three of the stolen weapons hidden in the defendants’ waistbands. Deputies recovered the remaining weapons near a home in the 400 block of Constance Road in Venice, where the suspects were staying. Major and Jacob Hopwood are charged with Armed Burglary and Emily Brodkorb is charged with Principal to Armed Burglary. Each faces an additional charge for Possession of a Concealed Firearm. When Hopwood provided his fingerprints, latent print examiners linked him to another burglary earlier this week on Gulf Club Lane in Venice. Detectives also charged him with Grand Theft. “We should all be very relieved that these guns were quickly and safely recovered before something tragic happened,” said Sheriff Tom Knight. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending. Detectives have reason to believe that more burglaries may have occurred and encourage anyone with information to contact Criminal Investigations at 941-861-1712.
