SARASOTA – Published May 24, 2014. Five people were injured early Saturday morning, including two who were medically evacuated by helicopter, after a man drove the wrong way on U.S. 41 near Main Street and collided with a taxi cab. Aj Capaccione · Florida State University: Curt Rud was his name and he had a revoked license. And one passenger did in fact, pass away because of this. He also tried to flee the scene on foot. Thank you SPD for catching this man. But Abbi is right, there is no possible way this person should have a bond available. This poor family down here vacationing for the weekend lost a love one for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

The wrong-way driver, Curt Lee Rud, 29, of Venice, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and knowingly driving with a suspended license, according to the probable cause affidavit. Police said they are still investigating if drugs were a factor in the crash. It was not the first legal trouble for Rud, who carries a lengthy criminal record involving drug and alcohol offenses, fighting, stealing golf carts, burglarizing cars and missing court dates, court files show. Authorities said Rud lives in Venice and works as a tile setter. He was born in Charlotte County and attended Port Charlotte High in 2001 and 2002, though there are no records of him graduating in the district, said Charlotte County Schools spokesman Michael Riley. In connection with two separate incidents in 2011, Rud pleaded guilty to felony charge of using/possessing drug paraphernalia and driving under the influence, and also paid a citation for possessing open alcohol in a vehicle, according to the Charlotte County Circuit Court website. In one incident, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office caught him with an oxycodone pill in his car. Less than two months later, Curt Rud was found passed out in the driver’s seat with a half-empty warm beer between his legs and the key in the ignition according to Sheriff’s Office records.
