Joining Atlanta, Orlando and other big Southern cities that one would expect to find on such a list, Sarasota ranks No. 9 on Penske Truck Rental’s list of top moving destinations, released minutes ago.
The top 10 are Atlanta, Phoenix, Orlando, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago, Houston, Denver, Seattle, Sarasota and Charlotte, N.C., Sarasota is by far the smallest city on the list.
Sarasota also was No. 9 on the 2010 chart. “U.S. residences continue migrating primarily toward warm-weather areas,” said Don Mikes of Penske. “The list is compiled through online consumer truck rental reservations and through our call centers.” The list was based on requests for one-way moves in 2011.

Siesta Beach was ranked No. 1 in the nation today in the annual survey by Dr. Stephen Leatherman, director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University.
“The sand is like sugar,” Leatherman said. “Some people can’t believe it. It’s super soft, super fine. They claim to have the finest, whitest sand in the world, and I can’t argue with that.” For the past two years, Siesta was ranked No. 2 in the survey. Now local tourism officials can boast of the top spot.
