SARASOTA HERALD TRIBUNE, SARASOTA COUNTY - Dogged police work uncovered key evidence against Shawn Tyson as far as three months after the fatal shooting of two British tourists, with police filling what looked to be major holes in the case.
Shawn Tyson was arrested shortly after the April 16 killings of two British tourists, but detectives have spent the three months since building a stronger case.
Detectives kept following long after the April 16 shooting in a Newtown housing project, where witnesses to crimes are often reluctant to cooperate with authorities, records released this week show.
At the outset they had no murder weapon, no bullet shells, and had still not identified the man seen running with Tyson from the spot where an intoxicated James Cooper, 25, and James Kouzaris, 24, were shot.
The investigators used unrelated charges in May as a way to interview some of Tyson’s closest friends, developing the identity of the second man fleeing the scene — convicted felon Steven Fields, who has not been charged.
They went back time and again to Tyson’s other friends, learning how Tyson called those friends in the minutes after the shooting (ON HIS CELL PHONE WITH TEXT MESSAGES) and reportedly bragged he and Fields had tried to rob the tourists.
The morning after the shooting, April 16th, 2011, , several people said, Tyson began bragging about the murders, police records state. A co-defendant of Tyson’s in the unrelated aggravated assault case, Diandrew Clarkson, told detectives that Tyson said he had killed two “British dudes” and said, “Yea, I got two under my belt.” Two friends of Tyson’s also told detectives he also bragged to them. Tyson said he went through the victims’ pockets while they proclaimed that they had nothing of value, the friends told police.
Police used a first name and description from Clarkson to identify Steven L. Fields, 19, as a suspect. Fields was released from prison in February on a 2007 robbery conviction. Detectives interviewed Fields at the jail on June 16, when he was in custody on an unrelated probation violation. Fields denied being involved in the murder; he said he barely knew Tyson, had never called him or been called by him, and didn’t know Tyson’s number. On Saturday April 16th at 9:54 am I started to receive a series of text messages from a Sarasota “Clubber” named Candy who claims there is a 2nd shooter in the murder of Brit Tourists James Cooper & James Kouzaris in what was to be a robbery for cash to buy “Ice”. Candy claims in her text message “I murdered someone and I am scared“. Brit Tourists James Cooper & James Kouzaris were murdered April 16th, 2011 at about 2:56 am in the Courts Newtown FL.
On Saturday afternoon April 16th 2011 at 1:58 pm, I received a second text message from “Candy” whereby she claims, “Call the cops I cannot I want to die really bad“. Brit Tourists James Cooper & James Kouzaris were murdered April 16th, 2011 at about 2:56 am in the Courts Newtown FL.
On Saturday afternoon April 16th, 2011, the witness who came forward to the Sarasota police about shawn Tyson, was being threatened by two of Shawn Tyson’s goon gang members, who had pulled out guns and were threatening to shoot him in broad daylight in Newtown.
”I know a guy who was involved in killing those British tourists he was bragging a couple of days ago he said he was trying to score “Ice” and helped kill them. On May 2nd at 6:37 pm I received the text message seen above (I photographed the phone on May 5th) from Candy telling me that she knows the second shooter.
