GOP Firm’s Tactics Sting Candidates

Base Connect Draws Fire From Left and Right.

Base Connect aka Freedom’s Defense Fund is run by Michael Centanni and Todd Zirkle, Robert Spencer has been a long time associate of Michael Centanni as a paid speaker for Young Americans for Freedom and other groups linked to and run by Michael Centanni.

Base Connect To Co-Sponsor CPAC 2010, Base Connect is happy to announce that is again a Co-Sponsor of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).  Base-Connect client American Conservative Union PAC  hosted the standing-room only reception for Allen West at the 2010 CPAC.

Freedom’s Defense Fund aka BMW Direct aka Base Connect Inc search’s out political candidates for election in the USA who are unknown and/or the least likely candidate to get elected to Congress in the USA, but supposedly strong conservative Republicans, Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer support these candidates on their websites like “William Russell for the Republican primary”.

BMW Direct aka Base Connect Inc aka Freedom’s Defense Fund Scam Congressional Candidates And Keep The Cash To Support Right Wing Radical Causes, Where Is The FBI ?

What the Scam is….Freedom’s Defense Fund aka BMW Direct aka Base Connect Inc search’s out political candidates for election in the USA who are strong on immigration restrictions and have an anti-Islamic agenda, but are specifically unknown or the least likely candidate to get elected to Congress in the USA (let’s find a “loser”).  BMW Direct aka Base Connect, which has a track record of raising a lot of campaign money and then directing most of it to affiliates or vendors, uses glossy direct-mail campaigns targeting conservatives across the country, urging them to chip in to help defeat liberal lawmakers and push hot-button right-wing issues.

A number of news stories have reported that BMW Direct aka Base Connect aka Freedom’s Defense Fund has kept a large percentage of the funds that it helps raise:

1). The National Black Republican Association raised $400,000 during 2005-2006 and paid out 80 percent of that to BMW Direct and for other fundraising expenses

2). In 2006, Charles A. Morse ran a brief write-in campaign to unseat U.S. Representative Barney Frank. Morse received just 145 votes in a primary and dropped out two months before the general election. BMW Direct aka Base Connect raised more than $700,000 for the race, some of it donated well after Morse dropped out. Of the funds raised, 96 percent were paid to BMW Direct and BMW Direct’s affiliates, Base Connect and contractors.

3). In 2006, Dr. Ada Fisher, who sought to unseat Mel Watt in a 2006 race for Congress, said that BMW Direct aka Base Connect, raised almost $400,000 for her campaign. But Fisher said she got less than $30,000 of that money; the rest went to the Base Connect company and others involved in the fundraising.

4). In 2006, Deborah Honeycutt was the Republican nominee in Georgia’s 13th Congressional District congressional elections. Honeycutt’s campaign raised more than $1.1. million, with most of the money she raised went to BMW Direct aka Base Connect . Honeycutt received 31 percent of the vote; David Scott, the Democratic incumbent, received 68%. In October 2008, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Honeycutt’s campaign had raised $4.3 million for a rematch with Scott, with most of the money going to BMW Direct aka Base Connect and the company’s contractors, who had raised it. “It takes money to raise money,” Honeycutt said. Honeycutt lost again in 2008, by the same wide margin.

5). As of 2008, the Base Connect company was raising money for Veterans for Victory, a Texas-based political action committee. During the 2006 congressional election campaign cycle, the committee spent $975,420, mostly on payments to BMW Direct aka Base Connect and related entities, giving about $28,000 in donations to candidates, where the hell is the FBI in all of this ?

May 04, 2010, WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Freedom’s Defense Fund (FDF) announced that it will extend its advertising buy today in support of William Russell for the Republican primary being held in Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional district on May 18th.  “William Russell is a decorated veteran, tested conservative and proven campaigner,” said Todd Zirkle, executive director of the Freedom’s Defense Fund. “He, alone, has earned the honor of adding this seat to the Republican column this November.”

Russell is set to face off in the May 18th Republican primary against the hand picked candidate of a few party insiders to represent Republicans in a special election slated for the same day. The Freedom’s Defense Fund is encouraging a broader swath of conservatives and Republicans to vote for William Russell to be the Republican standard bearer in the fall election. (William Russell lost, big time)

Scott Mackenzie is listed on federal disclosure reports as the treasurer for Russell’s campaign — as he has been for several other Base Connect clients in the past. In fact, as we reported in 2008, Base Connect’s website lists Mackenzie as a staffer with the firm, and also lists his own firm, Mackenzie and Company — which works out of the same Washington building — as a Base Connect “strategic partner.” The arrangement effectively allowing Mackenzie to oversee campaign accounts that cut checks to his colleagues. Another “strategic partner,” Legacy List Marketing, is run out of the same Washington office as Base Connect, as is an officially independent PAC, Freedom’s Defense Fund, which recently commissioned a Zogby poll that showed Russell leading his GOP primary (he lost). As one Republican consultant put it to TPMmuckraker last week: “The issue is: how many sides of the table are they on?”

One 2010 client of BMW Direct — now rechristened as Base Connect — is William Russell, the retired lieutenant colonel who is running for the Pennsylvania Congressional seat of the late John Murtha. Russell’s campaign raised over $895,000 in the fourth quarter of last year, according to federal disclosure records. But it paid over $719,000 of that amount — about 80 percent — to Base Connect, and other companies associated with it, which ran the company’s direct-mail fundraising program. For the year as a whole, Russell’s campaign raised over $2.8 million, but spent over $2.6 million — much of it again going to Base Connect – leaving it with cash on hand of just $211,000.

Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer (photo above) and others promote these weak Congressional candidates on their websites such as Florida’s Allen West who received $5,000 from Freedom’s Defense Fund and who BMW Direct aka Base Connect runs his direct mail campaign .

On Geller’s website she boasts Lt Colonel Allen West Making Salad out of Caesar,”  but “This afternoon, the Broward County Democratic Chair blasted Republican Congressional candidate Allen West today for his continuing use of extreme rhetoric and incendiary language.  Let me tell you what you got to do. You’ve got to make the fella scared to come out of his house,” West said. “And that’s the only way that you are going to win”

Freedom’s Defense Fund, came out with an ad, which accuses Obama of having “campaigned” for a “communist” Kenyan leader who “spread fundamental Islamic law” while “the Christian majority is under attack.” Both Politifact and Factcheck.org have already debunked these claims, popular among anti-Obama conspiracy theorists. They derive from the widely discredited book of Jerome Corsi, who has been a paid consultant to Freedom’s Defense Fund.

A series of ads in Michigan highlight that year’s roughest political attacks: narrowly aimed shots from small groups. The advertisements running here (Macomb County, Michigan) against Mr. Obama come from a group called Freedom’s Defense Fund, a political action committee based in Washington that was formed four years ago and raises money from conservatives around the country. The advertisements have stood out because of the group’s connections — including to its paid consultant, Jerome S. Corsi, the author of the highly negative, largely discredited political biography of Mr. Obama, “Obama Nation” — and what local critics say are their racial overtones”…
